Spanish at Oakwood!
At Oakwood British School, our Spanish curriculum includes Lengua, Valenciano, and Conocimiento del Medio, giving students a well-rounded understanding of the language, culture, and environment of the Valencian Community. These subjects are taught by qualified native teachers who make learning engaging and meaningful through hands-on activities, real-life connections, and creative experiences. Together, they help our students develop confidence in communication, a strong sense of place, and an appreciation for the rich culture that surrounds them.

Lengua
At Oakwood British School, our Lengua lessons are taught by qualified native-speaking teachers who specialise in their respective age groups across Primary and Secondary. This ensures that every child receives language teaching that is both engaging and age-appropriate. Following the guidelines set by the Valencian Community, our Lengua programme develops students’ confidence and fluency in Spanish while helping them gain a deeper understanding of local culture and identity.
In true Oakwood style, our Lengua lessons follow a hands-on, British teaching approach, where learning is active, creative, and meaningful. Students take part in practical activities, discussions, games, and projects that bring the language to life, making every lesson enjoyable and memorable. With an average of four lessons per week, children have regular opportunities to develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in a supportive environment.
Through this balance of academic rigour and real-world experiences, we aim to nurture confident bilingual learners who can communicate effectively and appreciate both the British and Valencian cultures that shape their education.

Valenciano
At Oakwood British School, we believe that learning Valenciano is an important way for our students to connect with the culture, traditions, and identity of the place we call home. Living in the Valencian Community, it’s essential that children develop an appreciation and understanding of the local language and its rich heritage.
Our qualified native Valenciano teachers make lessons engaging and meaningful, helping students gain confidence in understanding and using the language. Although pupils have one lesson per week, these sessions are carefully planned to celebrate where we live through songs, stories, festivals, and creative activities that bring Valencian culture to life.
By including Valenciano in our curriculum, we aim to help every child feel a sense of belonging and pride in their community, fostering respect for different languages and cultures while continuing Oakwood’s commitment to hands-on, enjoyable learning experiences.

Conocimiento del Medio
Conocimiento del Medio is a subject that helps children understand the world around them, combining elements of science, geography, and social studies. Through this area of learning, pupils explore topics such as nature, the environment, communities, and how people live and work together. It encourages curiosity about how things work and helps children make sense of their surroundings in both a local and global context.
At Oakwood British School, Conocimiento del Medio is taught by qualified native teachers who bring the subject to life through practical experiments, investigations, and creative projects. We follow the guidelines of the Valencian Community, while using a British-style, hands-on approach to ensure that learning is engaging, active, and meaningful. Lessons encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas, and connect their classroom learning to real-life experiences, fostering a genuine interest in the world they live in.
